Chapter 1
Kire awoke to the footsteps of his mother downstairs. He rose to find his younger brother standing in the middle of his room, playing with his sword. Kire got up and took the sword away, giving his brother a light slap on the side of his head.
"You are too young Delos." he said as he strapped his sword to his side. "Your time will come" he reassured his brother as he left the room.
Kire made his was down the bamboo stairs and moved into the kitchen. His mother was gutting fish as a small fire cracked in the hearth across the room.
"Where is he?" Kire asked her.
"Who your father? He was called to the healing hut in the early hours" she told him.
Kire looked out the small round window. The path to the village was very clear, and out beyond the tree tops was the ocean...his way out. Kire picked up a mango from a dish on the dinner table, and bid farewell to his mother. Today he would find his friends and search the island. Over the last few months this had become their favorite thing to do. Kire thought it was good to make due with what he had. It would be a few years still until he would be able to go anywhere out in the deep blue ocean...into the unknown.
Kire made he was down the path, the sun breaking through the branches and beating onto his face. It was not long until the path led onto a beaten down road. This was the main road used when traders came from places far away. Kire walked down the road, now there was small houses on each side of the road, he was in the village.
Kire walked up to a small hut, with a little girl sitting on the step. She had a small cloth doll, and she was pretending it was her baby.
"Hello Kady, how is your baby?" he asked stopping in front of the girl.
"Oh she's good, are you looking for Siv?" she asked looking up at Kire. Kire nodded and smiled to her. "He's not here, he left quite awhile ago...he went that way" she said pointing toward the path to the village center.
"Thank you, Kady" Kire said, and he was off.
Kire knew what his best friend was up too. For the last little while his friend Sivart Tsum had been gambling with some local boys behind the armory in the village center. They would each throw rocks at the back wall, and whichever rock lay closest to the wall wins the bet. Siv bet away all the money he could get his hands on. Either by fishing for someone, or taking whatever little silver his mother had.
Kire strode around the armory and sure enough he found Siv. Not only Siv, but also three others. The two bigger one's held him against the wall, while the smaller boy had a finger in Siv's face.
"Pay up!" demanded the boy.
Kire knew this boy, it was Ratil Talik. He was son of a murderer, who was hung when they were both very young. Kire's father signed the offical documents to hang Ratil's father, and it instantly created a dispute between the families.
"Get your hands off him" Kire demanded as he walked up to the four boys. Ratil turned around, and instantly a glare appeared on his face.
"Sabb...how nice to see you" he said as he took a step forward.
"Let him go" Kire demanded again.
"Why? he lost and doesn't want to pay" said Ratil.
"He cheated!" blurted out Siv, but was quickly quieted by the large hand of one of Ratil's friends.
"I believe you..."Kire said nodding to Siv. Kire then looked back at Ratil. "Let him go or I will-" started Kire.
"You'll what? Go get your father? He's an elder, not a King" laughed Ratil.
"No. Or I will fight you" said Kire boldy.
"Oh really, well my friends may have a problem with that" said Ratil.
"Your friends...dont have one of these" said Kire as he raised his sword up to his shoulder. Ratil stared at the sword and smirked.
"Would you really use it?" he asked Kire.
"Try me" growled Kire. Ratil looked back to his friends and nodded. With a final glare back at Kire, the three strode off.
Kire out his sword back at his side, and looked at Siv who had his head down in shame. "I know...I-" began Siv.
"No you don't know Sivart. You take your mother's money, you gamble it all away. Half the time Ratil steals your money anyway...why do you do it?" Kire asked looking into Siv's eyes.
"Someday I may win...and my mother and I won't have to worry about money anymore..." said Siv quietly.
"You can fish, work alittle and make an honest living" said Kire urgently.
"I guess, you are always right anyway" said Siv with a smile."
The two walked around the front of the building, and made their way down the path of the village center. Many of the people waved and nodded to Kire. This was normal. They all tried to make there best with family of the elders, because the major decisions of Hargoso were decided by the elders and if you wanted change you would have to go through it with them.
Kire and Siv had reached the beach. Kire peered out into the large blue world.
